Thursday and Friday Performances

Casting Call is 6pm. Please make sure all students are at the gym by 6:00, as I will be going around to each changeroom to have meetings with each grade group to go over what happened yesterday and what we need to fix to make tonight's show even better.
Thanks!

Wednesday's Performance

Wednesday's performance is for the English classes of the American School only. This is not a presentation for parents to come and see. Parents, please drop off your child at 4:30pm at the gym. Students are to go to the changerooms to get ready.
The show will finish around 7pm. Perhaps be at the school at 6:45 in case it ends slightly earlier.

Please ensure that you have ALL costume pieces before going home after each performance. Yesterday we collected many pieces that students left behind. Some were without names, which also shows the importance of labeling ALL costume pieces. Thanks!

Don't forget to buy your tickets at the bookstore to ensure you get seats for Thursday's and Friday's shows!

Dress Rehearsals and Performances

Hairdos for Females: I don't mind how each girl does her hair as long as it's pulled back and off of her face. This means any bangs should also be held back with clips and gel and/or hairspray as well.

Dressing Rooms: There is not enough space in the dressing rooms for all of the mothers to be changing their own children. Each dressing room will have teacher supervision, as well as a few mothers who have already signed up. Especially in 1st and 2nd grade, there is not enough space in the dressing rooms for 60 children and 60 moms. Please bring your child in their first costume to make things easier. They will receive assistance from the supervisors to change into their second. As suggested before, make sure all students have a leotard or bathing suit under their costume to make for easier costume changes.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

There will be no conflicts next week with the basketball schedule and games, as playoff week has been post-poned by a week in order to make sure not to over-exaust the children or have children missing games or practices.
Thank you to some of the mothers for their wonderful suggestion.
Thank you to all the parents for your understanding, patience, and support during this busy time of year!

Costumes

Almost everyone should have received their costumes by now. A few parents have been asking about costume pieces as some pieces were made and some have to be provided by you. In preparation for Tuesday's dress rehearsal, here's a list of all the costumes for each grade and what is needed:

  • 1st and 2nd Grade:

PETER PAN: Provided by the seamstress was a pair of brown pants, a green tunic with leaves, a (black?) belt, and a set of brown shoe covers to go over top of the students regular shoes. Only shoes do you need to provide. Should be black ones that they may also use for the Sound of Music.

SOUND OF MUSIC: Dresses (girls) and liederhosen (boys) were provided. I believe the boys received a tshirt that goes under the liederhosen, or perhaps it is already sewed into it. The only thing you need to provide are black shoes.

  • 3rd Grade:

GREASE: Boys were provided with a black "leather" jacket. You must provide your own plain black pants. I think there was a white t-shirt included for Oliver so please wear this under your jacket as well. If there wasn't one provided, please bring a plain white t-shirt from home to wear underneath. Girls were given a poodle skirt and 2 scarves. One scarf should be worn around neck. The other in their hair (ponytails). Girls also should wear the white shirt from Oliver with their skirts or else bring a plain white tshirt from home. You need to wear your own black shoes!

OLIVER: tops and bottoms were provided. I believe there is also a white shirt to wear under the top vest. Shoes should be the same black shoes from Grease.

  • 4th and 5th Grade:

ANNIE: Some sort of dress was provided. Some also came with aprons. Each child also has a scarf to wear on their head (like a bandana). Your own shoes should be provided. Preferably black but any old looking shoes would also do.

KIDS: Nothing was provided by the seamstress. All of this costume needs to be provided by you. Remember that I want you to look like older women. I don't want 4th and 5th graders that look like 4th and 5th graders in pretty dresses. I want old ladies! Think of gradmas. That's what I REALLY want! Make sure to wear shoes you can dance in - NOT high heels that you can't even walk in!

DIAMONDS ARE A GIRL'S BEST FRIEND: You will be given long red gloves, as well as a black hat, and a diamond ring (don't lose the ring as its small and we don't have more!). YOU need to provide your own black pants (or tights) and black tank top (or leotard). I don't want big baggy t-shirts or pants. Please make sure the clothes fit tight to your body.

    POPULAR:
Black skirts have been provided. The tu-tu part goes underneath (although we'll try it at the dress rehearsal and see if maybe that part looks better on the top). Leggings will also be provided. You will get those Monday. YOU need to provide your own coloured shirt on top. This shirt should be PLAIN! No patterns or pictures. SOLID colour only! Any colour is fine (pink, blue, green, purple, etc.). Again, it should be tight-fitting and preferably a tank top (no sleeves).

  • Transitional Actors:

You will be wearing all black unless you come straight from performing your number, in which case you would be wearing your costume.

Ms. Willett's Top 5 Golden Rules of Theatre Etiquette

1. NO CELL PHONES
Don't let them ring or buzz during a performance. Do not speak on them during a performance. If you must take an emergency call, leave the auditorium and only begin speaking to your caller once you away from the rest of the audience. Even your neat watch that beeps or chimes on the hour is a distraction.

2. NOISES
Don't whisper, let alone talk. You may not notice it, but candy or cough drop wrappers, whether unwrapped quickly or slowly, make a lot of noise! Please don't unwrap them during a performance. If you suspect you will need one, have a supply onhand already unwrapped. Also, we love babies, but if they fuss or fidget or cry, we want them to be somewhere else. Best to leave baby at home with a sitter.

3. RESPECT FOR NEIGHBOURS
Please sit still. Ramming elbows into your neighbour or kicking the seat in front of you is highly annoying. Be aware that hats and large hairdos make it hard for the person behind you to see. Please do not enter or exit the auditorium during a performance unless it is an emergency. Please arrive before the performance begins. The time posted is the time the show actually starts... there are no commercials or previews. The show begins at 7pm!

4. VIDEOS AND CAMERAS
Taping during the show or taking pictures during the show is strictly prohibited. It is not only distracting to the performers, but also to those people sitting around you. We will be having professional video done by a hired individual. DVDs will be on sale at a later date.

5. PLEASE DO!
Here are some things you SHOULD do: laugh at the appropriate moments; clap at the appropriate moments; tell the performers, after the show, how well they did; enjoy the performance!

Musical Info

PRODUCTION WEEK - please see the previous blog entry for next week's rehearsal schedule.

TICKETS - will be sold in the bookstore.
Prices: L100 per person for one night entrance. L150 for tickets that allow entrance for both nights. There will be special Combo Packages for families of the children in the musical. These packages will include 4 tickets to Thursday's performance, 4 tickets to Friday's performance, and 2 double tickets that allow entrance for both performances. This Combo Package saves you L100! Extra tickets or individual tickets can be purchased at the bookstore. Tickets will also be sold at the doors the night of the performances. (Please remember doors close at 7pm sharp!)

LABEL YOUR COSTUMES! Because the costumes all look the same for each grade level, and because there will be many children (and perhaps a little chaos) in the changerooms, PLEASE make sure to label ALL of your child's costumes with their name. This will save us from any confusion, mix-up, and lost costumes.

DURING THE SHOWS:
Snacks: Please send along a water bottle and a small snack with your child every day next week. This includes rehearsals and the nights of the show. NO JUICE PLEASE or any food that is messy or may stain the costumes. Snacks like grapes, cookies, granola bars, apple, etc. are perfect snacks that won't spill.
Changing Costumes: Grades will be assigned to changing rooms by grade levels. In some cases this may mean there are both males and females in the groups. Although boys will be somewhat separated from the girls by a small wall, all students should have a leotard or bathing suit on as a base for their costumes. This way, students can do changes without being caught in their underwear. Especially for the 4th and 5th grade students who have quick changes, this will help greatly.
Assistance in the Changerooms: There will be 2-3 teachers assigned to 1st and 2nd grade. There will be 2 teachers assigned to 3rd grade, and 1 assigned to 4th and 5th. These teachers will help students with changes in the changerooms, as well as manage behaviour and ensure the students are where they need to be when they need to be. In addition to this, possibly a few parents for the 1st and 2nd grade children (who require slightly more attention) can volunteer to assist. However, too many parents in the changerooms will make it even more hectic and chaos will ensue. Please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

NO CAMERAS OR VIDEOS: We will be hiring professional photographers who will be taking many photos during our Wednesday performance for the English courses. They will also be at the performances Thursday and Friday to take photos of the performances. In addition, they will be available during intermission and after the show for families to get photos with their star performer! We also are hiring someone to take video of the entire show. No cameras or video cameras will be permitted in the auditorium. Please leave these at home and let us do the work for you!

Any questions, please e-mail me (swillett@amschool.org)
SO excited for the performance. It's going to be a GREAT show!
